Paramount Pictures has premiered a new television spot for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender during the Olympics on Saturday. I was somewhat impressed by the original teaser trailer which accomplished everything in one continuous (yet stitched together) shot. But the television spot which aired during the Super Bowl had me completely sold. To me that spot had all the power of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the film will live up to that expectation — but the tv spot was pretty damn awesome. The full length movie trailer wasn’t quite as impressive. The new tv spot brings the focus back to the action visuals, which appears to be the film’strong spot . Watch it now, after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Official Plot Synopsis: Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film is set in a world where human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire. The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. The film’s hero, the reluctant young Aang (Noah Ringer), is the “Last Airbender” — the Avatar who, according to prophecy, has the ability to manipulate all of the elements and bring all the nations together. Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her bull-headed brother Sokka, Aang proceeds on a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Dev Patel plays the Fire Nation’s evil prince Zuko. Exiled from the Fire Nation by his father, Zuko is sent to capture the Avatar in order to restore his honor and right to the throne.
The Last Airbender will hit theaters on July 2nd 2010.

Universal Pictures has released the upcoming Superbowl television spot/trailer for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood on Yahoo. Watch it now, embedded after the jump.
In 13th century England, Robin Hood (Russell Crowe) and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.
Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.
With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.
Robin Hood hits theaters on May 14th 2010.

Universal Studios will air the first television commercial for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the new theme park section of Universal’s Islands of Adventure which will launch in Spring 2010. The 30 second television spot is now available online, and is embedded below. But you didn’t expect it to feature any real footage of the still-in-construction park, did you?

We haven’t seen any new footage of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender (aka the original Avatar) since last June when the teaser premiered. The film has been test screening this week, with two very mixed reader reviews showing up on AICN.
Not being all that familiar with the animated series on which the film is based, I’m just curious to see how Shyamalan fares with a film that isn’t based on his own story, and where he’s in thrall to action and effects in a way that is new to his work. And based only on this spot, the action and effects look pretty damn good. Check it out after the break.
UGO relaunched recently, and they’ve got the exclusive first look at the spot. (Embedded below.) I’m not a fan of Shyamalan’s by any means but this looks like it could be impressive. More important, it looks as if it could actually be fun, which is a quality his films rarely manage to capture. Or: he rarely captures fun intentionally; his last three films make up an amazing trilogy of unintentional comedy.
The Last Airbender is based on the animated series Avatar, which airs on Nickelodeon. We should see a full trailer soon that will show off a lot more of the characters and set up the story. In the meantime, here’s the synopsis:
The film is set in a world where human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire. The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. I’m excited to see Boardwalk Empire. The new HBO series has a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese (who also serves as exec producer) and I can’t wait to see what he’s turned out from the relatively short shooting schedule offered a TV pilot. I love seeing good feature directors work within constraints they’ve long since outgrown. Sometimes the results can be energetic and spectacular. Hoping for that from Boardwalk Empire. Now there’s a teaser trailer, and the period recreation looks great, at the very least. Check it out below.
The show is scripted by Terence Winter based on Nelson Johnson’s book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City. The whole thing takes place in Atlantic City during Prohibition, and primarily hinges on Steve Buscemi’s character Nucky Johnson. He’s based on a real power figure who reigned over Atlantic City for three decades.
Also in the show are Gretchen Mol, playing a showgirl, Dabney Coleman as Nucky’s mentor, and Michael Shannon, Michael Kenneth Williams, Kelly McDonald and Michael Pitt. You’ll see a few of them in the teaser; there’s only a little bit of Michael Shannon, for instance, but he’s definitely there. It’s a great cast, and working for Scorsese in a period piece? Hell yes. Love it.
Most of this footage looks cinematic as hell. Amazing that this is where TV has ended up. Stuart Dryburgh shot this; he’s also responsible for cinematography in Amelia and Julie Taymor’s upcoming The Tempest. Only quibble I have is that the music, while appropriate for a teaser like this, isn’t representative of the period. Anyone know what that track is? Perhaps it’s the show’s theme, or a variation thereof.
Here’s the teaser; can’t wait to see the pilot.

ABC has released yet another 1 minute trailer for the sixth and final season of LOST. We’ve seen a lot of promos for this upcoming season, none of which contain any new footage (something mandated by the series producers, in order to avoid spoilers). This time around ABC edited the television advertisement in the form of a bedtime story. Watch the new spot now, embedded after the jump.

And while all of the spots feature no new footage, each tv spot hints at a cliffhanger which will finally be resolved in this final season. Also available after the jump are six new television spots for the new season of 24.

LOST: Oceanic Air flight 815 tore apart in mid-air and crashed on a Pacific island, leaving 48 passengers alive and stranded on a remote island in the South Pacific. The survivors include a diverse group of people from different walks of life — a doctor, an escaped fugitive, a con man, an Iraqi interrogator, a married Korean couple and a man formerly confined to a wheelchair who is now inexplicably healed. As the castaways attempt to get home, flashbacks (and forwards) illuminate their troubled lives before and after the crash, as the island that they find themselves stranded on begins to slowly reveal its mysterious nature. Faith, reason, destiny and free will all clash as the island offers opportunities for both corruption and redemption… but as to its true purpose? That’s the greatest mystery of all.
The survivors discovered that the island holds many secrets, including a mysterious smoke monster, polar bears, housing and hatches with electricity and hot & cold running water, a group of island residents known as “The Others,” and a mysterious man named Jacob. They’ve found signs of those who came to the island before them, including a 19th century sailing ship called The Black Rock, a downed Beechcraft plane from a failed drug run, the remains of an ancient, four-toed statue, as well as bunkers belonging to the Dharma Initiative — a group of scientific researchers who inhabited the island in the recent past. The survivors also encountered a freighter stationed off the island that some thought would lead to their rescue, but ultimately almost caused their extinction. And Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and Claire’s son, Aaron — known as the Oceanic 6 - actually escaped the island and made their way back into the world. But their stay turned out to be short-lived since the island wasn’t through with them, yet.
With only 18 original hours left until the final episode airs in 2010, the island’s violent shifts through time were ended by Locke when he traveled off-island in an attempt to persuade the Oceanic 6 to return. Back on the island, the survivors’ stay in late ’70s Dharmaville was over when their covers were blown and they were accused of aiding “The Others,” and Sayid was gravely wounded during their flight. In addition, Ben killed Jacob at Locke’s request. But since Locke’s body was found to still be inside the coffin, exactly who - or what - is John Locke? And if Juliet was successful in detonating the hydrogen bomb, was she able to reset time, allowing Oceanic Air 815 to land safely in Los Angeles, or was the island destroyed along with all of its inhabitants?
The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must continue to work together against all odds if they want to stay alive. But as they have discovered during their journey, nothing is what it seems, and danger and mystery loom behind every corner, with even those they thought could be trusted turning against them. Even heroes - and leaders — have secrets.
“Lost” stars Naveen Andrews as Sayid, Nestor Carbonell as Richard Alpert, Emilie de Ravin as Claire, Michael Emerson as Ben, Jeff Fahey as Frank Lapidus, Matthew Fox as Jack, Jorge Garcia as Hurley, Josh Holloway as Sawyer, Daniel Dae Kim as Jin, Yunjin Kim as Sun, Ken Leung as Miles, Evangeline Lilly as Kate, Terry O’Quinn as Locke and Zuleikha Robinson as Ilana.
“Lost” was created by Jeffrey Lieber and J.J. Abrams & Damon Lindelof. Abrams, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, Jean Higgins, Elizabeth Sarnoff, Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Jack Bender and Carlton Cuse serve as executive producers. “Lost,” which is filmed entirely on location in Hawaii and premiered on September 22, 2004, is from ABC Studios.

24: Katee Sackhoff, Freddie Prinze Jr., Mykelti Williamson, John Boyd, Jennifer Westfeldt and Chris Diamantopoulos have joined the cast of 24 for the series’ eighth season. The Emmy Award-winning drama starring Kiefer Sutherland returns for its next astonishing day with a two-night, four-hour premiere beginning Sunday, Jan. 17 (9:00-11:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
Season Eight will unfold in New York City amidst the shadows of the Statue of Liberty and the United Nations. In this new day, CTU has been upgraded and is run by MBA-schooled and razor-sharp head honcho BRIAN HASTINGS (Williamson, “Forrest Gump”). COLE ORTIZ (Prinze Jr.), an ex-Marine who wants to follow in JACK BAUER’s (Sutherland) footsteps, runs the division’s Field Operations. Expert data analyst DANA WALSH (Sackhoff, “Battlestar Galactica”) collaborates with systems analyst ARLO GLASS (Boyd, “The Notorious Bettie Page”) inside CTU. ROB WEISS (Diamantopoulos, “The Starter Wife”) serves as PRESIDENT ALLISON TAYLOR’s (Cherry Jones) new chief of staff, and MEREDITH REED (Westfeldt, “Grey’s Anatomy”) is an ambitious journalist with ties to the unfolding situation.
As previously announced, Sutherland, Jones, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Annie Wersching also return. In addition, Bollywood icon Anil Kapoor (“Slumdog Millionaire”) makes his American TV debut as OMAR HASSAN, a Middle Eastern leader who comes to the U.S. on a peacemaking mission.

Earlier this month, ABC began airing a 30-second television spot for the final season of LOST featuring clips from past seasons set to a Willie Nelson cover of Amazing Grace. Sure, the spot wasn’t as cool as that Spanish chessboard teaser spot, but it was still nicely edited. The network has begun airing a 60-second version of the “Amazing Grace” spot, which features more appearances by LOST cast-members. Watch the spot now after the jump.

There’s more strings to Garth Jennings‘ bow than to a life sized Harp lager logo. Along with producer Nick Goldsmith and (sometimes) editor Dom Leung, Jennings is one part of Hammer and Tongs, creators of world-beating music videos and commercials; he’s part of Squid Vicar, a Tongs offshoot musical… thing that has played a fair sized handful of gigs and released an album of telephone hold music; he’s the best presenter that The Adam and Joe Show on 6 Music doesn’t always have; he directed The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Son of Rambow; and he’s particularly good at telling Mark Kermode to “Fuck off” on TV. Basically, he’s living the dream.
In interview to discuss his new video for Vampire Weekend’s Cousins (which you can see below the break, alongside a test/pitch version), Jennings also gave a minor update on the two big-screen projects he’s got in development - one animation, the other “a live action epic”.
The script for the animated film has been completed, Jennings tells Pitchfork, while the epic is still being worked on. Both are “gigantic labours of love” he says and hopes that “someone will let us play with them soon”.
This Hammer and Tongs ad from a couple of years back shows a dalliance with CG-rendered character animation in something like a Pixar vein.
In an old Coming Soon interview, they revealed that a deal was in place with Universal’s Illumination, but it’s not known if that still stands or not. Another interview with Eye for Film saw Jennings suggest something between Pixar and Sylvain Chomet is intended for the project. On the record, though, he has always said that he’s not sure if the film will be in CG or hand drawn animation and that they will let the story dictate. Of course, with a completed script, the story can now get on dictating. So, which will it be, Garth? Perhaps the budget will do some dictating too, which isn’t fair, but hardly a surprise.
As for the epic, it’s still being written. They did describe Son of Rambow as an epic, several times, so don’t necessarily expect hordes of orcs sweeping rambunctiously across the plains.
Here’s the Cousins video and he demo clip embedded below, and if you click over to the Hammer and Togs portfolio, my favourite commercial of the year, a beautifully well executed, supremely well thought out little spot for Boots.
