Yesterday we posted ten seconds of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight series. Now we’ve got the full trailer for the David Slade-directed chapter, which, based on this trailer, brings the love triangle between Bella (Kristen Stweart), Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) much closer together.
One of the classic rules of storytelling is ’show don’t tell,’ but Eclipse is like the Hulk. Eclipse does not care about your puny rules. So, here we’ve got it all laid out, easy to understand. Bella wants the vampire Edward, but he doesn’t want her to lose her humanity. Jacob wants Bella, and will fight for her. Add in a couple of antagonists and we’re done. Subtlety what?
Then again, this teaser takes a different tactic from most. It doesn’t hint at setpieces, choosing instead to remind a potential audience that we’re just here to see these characters romantically butt heads. As such, the whole of the movie’s conflict seems to be set in forests and meadows. Which is fine — it is the Pacific Northwest, after all — but that makes the film look cheap and limited in scope.
This trailer also introduces Bryce Dallas Howard, who replaces Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria. (Looking at the IMDB, I’m also pointed to the fact that Jodelle Ferland, the young actress from Silent Hill and Tideland, is in Eclipse, which I hadn’t realized previously.) I really hope that Howard and Taylor Lautner come off looking a lot better in the full film than they do here. All those efforts to build tentpole films around Lautner might end up looking pretty silly in a couple months.
But I get it. These movies are not for me. This one in particular is not for me. If these movies are for you, Yahoo has the teaser in HD, should you want to see every pine needle that figuratively decorates Bella’s cold heart.

Just days after the full trailer for Floria Sigismondi’s The Runaways slipped out across the web, here comes a music video showcasing Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart as members of the titular band - you can see it for yourself after the break. I don’t know if I’ll like this film or not, but I’m thinking the cult of celebrity will help turn it into a monster hit.
The song’s performance appears to be credited to Fanning, “featuring” Stewart and Sigismondi is credited as the director, but I’m not clear yet if that’s just because the whole thing is made up of footage from the movie.

It’s a teaser for a trailer! The real trailer for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be online tomorrow in advance of the theatrical premiere Friday, where it will be attached to the Robert Pattinson film Remember Me. In the meantime, you can now see ten seconds from Eclipse. Here we get a truncated bit of dialogue that sets up, or more properly reiterates, the core conflict at the heart of this romance: does mopey Bella (Kristen Stewart) choose Edward (Pattinson) or Jacob (Taylor Lautner)? Sadly, we don’t get much sense for how new director David Slade will treat the material. Here, it looks like a midpoint between the previous two Twilight films.
But the real reason I’m posting this is that I can’t get over the bit of dialogue from Jacob. “I’m going to fight for you…until your heart stops beating.” Is there any creepier profession of dedication than that? (OK, obviously there is, but in this context I’m still loving Jacob’s line.)

It’s a a lot better than the teaser, as it goes slightly lighter on all the world-changing crap and shows off the characters and the LA dives and parties in which they came together.
Yahoo has the trailer, and I wonder if the film will look as washed out on screen as it does in the trailer. I get it — there’s some attempt to recreate the visuals of the time, and I can see the washed-out images being part of that. I do love how creepy Michael Shannon looks as Kim Fowley, the producer who helped the group come together and took more than his share of the credit for the band. Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart look a bit like girls trying to look like rock stars, but that might be exactly the point. Is that what the real versions of their characters were like? Could be.
And is that what the ‘rock and roll history’ part of the narration is meant to represent? Some youthful naivete and misunderstanding of the mercurial nature of the music business? Maybe.
You can also now hear the full version of ‘Cherry Bomb’ as sung by Dakota Fanning for the film. (It’s heard in part in the trailer.) I’ve seen some comments blasting Fanning’s performance, but let’s face it: Cherie Currie always got by on style and moxie more than vocal ability. Fanning stacks up fine, I think. Is this going to go into the iPod rotation? Probably not, but it is hardly a bad job.

Hot on the heels of new distributor Apparition announcing that it will bring The Runaways to theatres comes a teaser trailer for the film. We get a little taste of Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in character as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, and hear Michael Shannon doing some voice over as impresario Kim Fowley. It’s decent-looking stuff, and backed by the band’s catchy hit ‘Cherry Bomb’. Check it out after the break.
MTV presents the clip — appropriate, given the site’s tendency to run even the smallest Twilight-related tidbit. A new movie featuring the star of that series evidently qualifies as worthy coverage.
The footage looks a bit more glossy than I was expecting based on some of what I’ve read about director Floria Sigismondi’s take on the story, but that’s fine. If the on-stage performances come across well I can deal with everything else. We only get a brief glimpse of the band performing, and they look good. Fanning has Currie’s raw, almost dirty sexuality down, and Stewart definitely has Jett’s attitude. (And her own lip licking and biting, but that’s to be expected.)
I’m not wild about the whole ‘girls that changed rock’ angle that is implied by the narration, as I’d rather just see the conflict between the band and Kim Fowley. (Incidentally, in the brief glimpse we get of Shannon as Fowley, he looks perfectly creepy, which I love.)

This is partially due to their music but more so to the fact that they were teenage girls whose wild and reckless lifestyle was the stuff of legend. Focusing on the duo of guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett and lead vocalist Cherie Currie as they navigate a rocky road of touring and record-label woes, the film chronicles the band’s formation as well as their meteoric rise under the malevolent eye of an abusive manager.
Acclaimed video artist Floria Sigismondi directs from her own script, and her luscious camerawork captures every sweaty detail—from the filthy trailer where the women practice to the mosh pits of Tokyo.
The Runaways will play Sundance in January and hit theatres in general release in March.
